Love in the Ashes

“What you love is the cure.” —African Proverb

Love requires our vulnerability. Love opens us to both beauty and pain. Love asks us to a dynamic encounter with life as it is, in all its wild messiness.

It’s time to face the darkness with the fire of our love. Through conversation and ceremony, we will mark the arrival of the New Moon, and enter the mytho-poetic invitations of Ash Wednesday as a portal to touch the depths of love.

Why Ash Wednesday?

Death. Grief. Soul-searching. These are the dark gifts of Ash Wednesday, a holy day in the Christian tradition. But this event takes us out of the church and into the night.

We will rake through the ashes and see what embers still burn.

Love is the fire that warms the night and fuels our passion. And love leaves us vulnerable, open to beauty and pain. Love asks us to a profound and dynamic encounter with life as it is, in all its messiness.

Ash Wednesday reminds us love is heartbreak. We grieve because we love. Every lament is a love song.

Ash Wednesday reminds us that love includes death. We come from the earth and to the earth we will return. Death will come for all of us. And yet death is not the opposite of life, but rather part of the spiral dance of life itself.

Once upon a time, our bones were blazing stars, and now we stand as earth’s expression, yet again, of love incarnate.

We gather in ceremony to remember our wild belonging to this good earth. Together we remember the Spirit who sang this spiral dance into being. We remember the oneness of the great web of life.

What to expect:

  • A sacred, compassionate community; space to listen and share from the heart

  • Space for conversation and questions around the theme of love in the ashes

  • Song, movement and ritual

  • Space to journal and reflect (bring your own journal and pen)

  • Stories and poems. We’ll explore the stories of Jesus and the Hindu goddess Kali Ma

Who’s this for?

This space is open to those who identify as womxn or non-binary and who are longing to connect to body, to earth, to ritual, and to the Divine Presence within and between. Although the Ash Wednesday holy day comes from the Christian tradition, we’ll be exploring it from a spacious, mytho-poetic lens rather than a religious one.
